TL;DR
- Is AI as creative as humans? On a single idea, yes. A review of 28 studies with 8,214 people found no real gap
- The difference is variety. AI keeps coming back to the same few ideas. Different AI models land on the same ones too
- That fits how AI works. It predicts the most likely answer. People bring their own lives, moods and odd connections
- Teams that brainstorm with AI get better ideas, but less varied ones
- The fix is order. Think on your own first, then bring AI in
Yes, AI Is Creative
Start with the fair answer. AI is creative, at least by the tests we use on people.
A 2025 review of 28 studies with 8,214 people compared AI and humans on creative tasks. It found no real difference. The researchers called it parity, not super-human creativity.
Some studies go further. In a 2026 study, ChatGPT-4o took standard creativity tests next to 81 psychology students. It came out more original than the less creative students.
So can AI come up with a good idea? Yes. Often a better one than you'd get from a tired team on a Monday morning.
But a good idea isn't the whole question. The real question is whether AI is creative like humans.
But It's Creative Like an Average
The short answer is no, and the reason is how AI works. AI is statistical. It learned from millions of human ideas, and it predicts what comes next. What it hands back tends to sit in the middle of all of them.
You can see it in the research:
- Same story, new words. A June 2026 study had 10 AI models write stories from the same prompts people had written for. The AI stories were much more alike than the human ones. Top models drifted toward one generic, average story. Telling them what to avoid or turning up the randomness didn't fix it
- Different models, same ideas. The Artificial Hivemind study tested more than 70 models on real open-ended questions. Models from different companies kept landing on similar ideas, with small changes in wording. And a look at three years of models found they are getting more alike over time, not less
- Old ideas, glued together. Researchers gave 9 current models the same papers that inspired real human research. Between 47% and 64% of the AI ideas were about connecting existing work. For the human researchers it was 12%
- Lucky number 7. The chat tools you use every day are trained to be helpful and safe. That training also makes them narrow. Ask one for a random number and it leans toward 7
One AI answer can look brilliant. A hundred AI answers start to look like one.
What People Do That AI Doesn't
People are messy. That's the point.
Each person brings a different life to the table. A different job, a bad week, a strange hobby, a memory that pops up for no reason. That's where the unexpected idea comes from.
A July 2026 experiment tested this directly. Native and non-native English writers wrote creative metaphors. Then the researchers tried to simulate the same writers with AI. Every AI version came out more uniform than every real human group. Turning up the randomness added variety only by making the writing worse.
Brain data points the same way. A 2026 study compared AI models with brain scans of people doing a creative task. While reading the prompt, bigger models looked a lot like a creative human brain. Once they started producing an answer, the match got weaker. AI understands the question in a human-like way. It makes the idea in a different way.
And people's ideas hold up better. In a 2025 Stanford study, experts rated AI research ideas higher than human ones. Then the ideas were actually carried out and judged again. Human ideas kept their scores. AI ideas dropped by 1 to 2 points out of 10, and the ranking flipped.
What Happens When Your Team Brainstorms With AI
This is where it hits your business.
The same review of 28 studies found that people working with AI did better than people working alone. Good news. But their ideas also got much less varied. Each person got better. The group started to sound alike.
An MIT Media Lab study measured brain activity while people wrote essays. People writing on their own showed the strongest brain activity. People using ChatGPT showed the weakest. They also felt the least ownership of what they wrote.
Timing makes it worse. A 2025 review of the research found AI hurts creativity most when people use it early. People take the good-enough suggestion instead of writing their own.
And AI ideas can look better than reality allows. HBR followed senior creatives in TV and advertising for a year. In one case, a client approved an AI concept image. A man's cap shaded his face, but his eyes were lit. The photographer saw right away that no real lighting could do that. The production team was now asked to shoot something reality can't produce.
How to Get Both
You don't need to choose between AI and people. Use each where it's strong.
Think first, then open the AI. Give your team 15 minutes alone before anyone types a prompt. In the MIT study, people who wrote on their own first and then used AI showed more brain activity and better recall than people who started with AI.
Let AI raise the floor, not set the ceiling. AI is great at a solid first draft, a list of obvious options, the ten ideas everyone would think of. Get those out of the way early. Then ask your people for what's left.
Don't count on more AI tools for more variety. Asking three AI tools isn't three opinions. The research shows they often land in the same place. Real variety comes from different people.
Test ideas against the real world early. AI ideas sound strong in a pitch. Build a small version, show it to a customer, or check it with the person who'd have to deliver it. That's the step where the Stanford AI ideas lost their lead.
Teach people how to think with AI. Research in HBR found AI boosts creativity mainly for employees who are good at thinking about their own thinking. MIT Sloan professor Jackson Lu, one of the authors, suggests pairing AI rollout with that kind of training.
Keep different people in the room. The mix of people on your team is your edge. Their different backgrounds are the one thing AI can't fake.
So, Is AI Creative Like Humans?
No. And that's good news.
AI is as creative as the average person, very fast, at any hour. That's useful. But AI predicts. People surprise.
The ideas that set your business apart will come from the part AI can't copy. Different people, thinking on their own, before the machine fills the blank page.
If your team brainstorms with AI and the ideas are starting to sound the same, feel free to reach out. No pitch, just a real conversation about where AI helps your team think and where it gets in the way.
